Massive Hickam AFB hangars are silent witnesses to day of infamy
The massive steel supports of the maintenance hangars at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, are the witnesses to history, as shown by the gouges and holes seen here. On Dec. 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, launching the U.S. into World War II. The remnants of that attack, seen here. are carefully preserved. The 940th Maintenance Group sent 35 members from Sept. 14-28 to assist the 154th Maintenance Squadron, Hawaii Air National Guard, with maintenance on their fleet of KC-135s and the new C-17s assigned to the active duty. The Guard works daily inside the World War II hangars which have been preserved. (US Air Force photo/Master Sgt Ellen L Hatfield
