Staff Sgt. J. Thorpe, a 9th Physiological Support Squadron member, briefs local area business leaders on the high-altitude full pressure suit designed to protect U-2 Dragon lady pilots from hypoxia, a condition affecting the whole body or a localized region while the body is in a low-oxygen environment. When people experience altitude sickness they may feel nausea, fatigue, light headedness, and vision changes and other symptoms may occur. The suit also protects pilots when they fly above Armstrong’s line or over 62,000 feet. Without the suit a pilot’s blood would boil at that altitude if the plane depressurized.
