Diamond Tips - Wearing the Air Force Physical Fitness Uniform

By the First Sergeant's Council 940th Air Refueling Wing

Squadrons recently issued the new physical fitness uniform. Many First Sergeants are receiving questions regarding wear of this new gear. Some common questions are:

1. Is the t-shirt worn tucked in or out?
ANSWER: Either.

2. Can I wear a headband?
ANSWER: Yes (black, blue, or white).

3. Must I wear the reflective belt and other safety gear?
ANSWER: This is at the discretion of the installation commander. Beale AFB policy does not require the reflective belt, since the PTU is already reflective. Safety items such as reflective belts, camelbacks and fanny packs may be worn.

4. Do I salute when in the PTU?
ANSWER: No.

5. May I wear other non-PTU pieces of clothing with the PTU?
ANSWER: Yes. Additional civilian clothing items may be added to the PT gear, but color consistency should be reasonably compatible to support a professional appearance.

6. Can the jacket be worn unzipped?
ANSWER: Yes. Jackets may be zipped, unzipped and worn with civilian clothes.

7. Can stretch shorts be worn under the uniform shorts?
ANSWER: Black or navy blue leggings or stretch shorts may be worn under the shorts.

8. What color socks are worn with the PTU?
ANSWER: White socks of any length and small conservative trademarks are authorized.

9. Does it matter what type tennis shoes are worn with the PTU?
ANSWER: Any athletic shoes may be worn with the PTU.

10. Can hats be worn while wearing the PTU?
ANSWER: Hats or knit caps are authorized provided they meet military image requirements.

11. Can I wear headphones when in the PTU?
ANSWER: Headphones are still authorized.

12. May I wear a bandana?
ANSWER: Bandanas and other similar head scarves are not authorized unless Airmen have a medical waiver.
