Yellow Ribbon Event Connects Families with Resources, Each Other

By Dana Lineback 940th Wing Public Affairs

Families of deployed Reservists gathered to share stories, box care packages, and learn about a myriad of available resources at a 940th Wing Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program event March 20 in Sacramento, Calif.

The event focused on the challenges and stressors associated with separation, especially for those with loved ones serving in a combat zone, said event coordinator, Master Sgt. Michelle Duchesne.  Attendees heard guest speakers on a variety of topics, including "The Emotional Cycle of Deployment" and "Challenges of Reunion and Reintegration."

"This was an excellent chance for families who are experiencing having a loved one deployed to get together to socialize, exchange ideas and experiences, and educate themselves on the challenges of reintegration their family may face when the member returns, " Duchesne said..

Started in conjunction with the Air Force Year of the Family, the YYRP is an Air Force Reserve Command-wide effort to recognize and address the needs of Reservists and their families at times of deployment. The program consists of a series of five events spread out throughout the course of a member's deployment.

With twenty-six 940th Wing Reservists currently deployed, there are members in various stages of the deployment cycle, according to Duchesne. "At each juncture, the Reserve Command wants to ensure that members and their families receive the support and education they need to prepare, endure, and recover from the rigors of combat deployment and family separation."

The first time her son, SSgt Daniel Curtis, a 940th Wing Security Forces member, was deployed,  Theresa Curtis Jones said she was a nervous wreck.. "But I'm more prepared this time because of this (Yellow Ribbon) program," Jones said.
